What does a colourist actually do?

 

A colourist is a hairdresser who specializes in colouring people’s hair. In Japan, where I am from the history of the colourist is only 25 years old and I have been training there for many years.

Basically, the colourists create the image for the clients instead of the shapes that the stylists do. There are over 100 ways of depicting hair colouring on the same hairstyle. The lighter tones make the client look more feminine, the vivid shade makes them look more elegant. In the consultation, the colourists use the skill of personal colour analysis which is the process of finding colours to match a person’s skin complexion and eye color. The colorists always focus on making the client’s hair colour healthy and shiny matching their skin colour.

The stylists create clients hair length and texture very thoroughly with an idea of their head shapes and amounts of hair. On the other hand, the colourists handle the tone and shade to match the client’s eyes colour. Sometimes their natural grey hairs become the perfect highlights for making the shiniest hair colouring.

I do not cut hair and do not use any scissors. I use my experience and creativity to finding the perfect colouring system to match your skin tone and hairstyle. This colouring session is my unique way to make each of my clients an even more beautifully expressed individual than they already are!

日本でのカラーリストの歴史はまだたったの25年。ハサミを持たず、ヘアカラーだけを専門とするカラーリストの存在は未だ広くは知られていません。

 

スタイリストはコームとハサミを使って形を作りますが、私たちカラーリストは刷毛とカラー剤を使ってイメージを作ります。一言にピンク系のヘアカラーと表現しても”キュート”なイメージのピンクから”エレガント”なイメージのピンクまで色の幅はとても広いのです。
又、スタイリストが骨格に合わせ長さを決め毛量を調節するのと同じようにカラーリストは肌色、瞳の色に合わせ、明度・彩度を調合し、白髪さえも活かしてカラーデザインをします。
